Kathmandu : In Nepal, amidst ongoing political upheaval marked by coalition shifts and reconstructions, the paramount focus appears to be on attaining political stability, while socioeconomic issues take a backseat. Concurrently, Nepal is grappling with mounting protests from pro-monarchy factions advocating for a return to monarchical rule and the restoration of Nepal as a Hindu state. These protests, gaining momentum in recent months, cast doubt on the ability of Nepali leaders to consolidate democracy as the preferred political system, especially given the country's tumultuous political landscape with 13 new governments formed in the past 16 years.

Amidst this backdrop, the reemergence of Prachanda within the Communist Party of Nepal - Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML) alongside KP Sharma Oli signifies a potential shift towards a more pro-China stance, potentially straining India-Nepal relations. However, such speculations overlook the deep-rooted ties between India and Nepal, founded on centuries-old religious, cultural, economic, and political bonds, along with an open border facilitating familial and matrimonial relationships.

Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S Jaishankar's recent visit to Nepal underscored Prime Minister Modi's 'HIT' formula aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, focusing on highways, information highways, and transways. During this visit, significant commitments were made, including financial aid for earthquake-hit regions and collaborative initiatives in education, culture, and infrastructure.

India's engagement with Nepal extends beyond rhetoric, with tangible projects like the Ramayan Circuit and cross-border rail services already underway. The partnership encompasses various sectors, including education, where collaborations between institutions like IIT Madras and Kathmandu University are facilitating joint degree programs.

Furthermore, recent agreements between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba have bolstered cooperation in sectors like solar energy, railways, and petroleum. These agreements not only enhance economic ties but also underscore India's commitment to Nepal's development and prosperity.

Contrary to China's neocolonial approach characterized by debt-trap diplomacy, India's engagement with Nepal is founded on principles of mutual respect and sovereign equality. While China pursues strategic interests, India prioritizes Nepal's well-being, extending favorable terms and assistance reflective of their shared history and culture.

In conclusion, amidst Nepal's political uncertainties, India remains steadfast in its support, fostering a partnership grounded in shared values and aspirations. Through collaborative initiatives and unwavering commitment, India seeks to promote regional stability, connectivity, and socioeconomic progress, transcending borders and fostering a vision of inclusive growth and cooperation in the South Asian region.
